Confession: We've lived in our house for a year and a half and have yet to hang one damn thing on the walls. Seriously. Not one single picture, painting or shelf. We did replace the flat screen tv over the fireplace, but since we had to have the Geek Zone from Best Buy come out and install it, I've decided that doesn't count.
I realize this makes me a terrible person.
It's not that I haven't tried. We've purchased many things to hang on the walls. I'm sure I don't have to remind you about the mirror. {Still sitting on the bedroom floor.} I have a collection of Pottery Barn frames which would be perfect for a gallery wall, but they're sitting in the den waiting to be filled with pictures. And then there's the collection of plates I've been accumulating for my plate wall. They're gathering dust in a kitchen cupboard.
I think it all boils down to one thing: a fear of commitment. Decorating commitment that is. What if it looks terrible? Or what if I choose the wrong pictures for the frames? Or I put a giant hole in the drywall trying to hang something? Or maybe it would look better on that wall over there... The fear becomes debilitating, nothing gets done and here we are a year later with a house full of bare walls.
So, I did the only reasonable thing. I hired a handyman to hang everything. No, wait. That's not what I did. I bought more shit.
I might have gone a little overboard on a recent trip to Ballard Designs. Here's what I picked up:
The Cool Mist Giclee print. {For the record, I'm already having buyer's remorse. I'm wondering if I should have bought this instead.}
I got this chandelier {with different colored shades} to replace the hideous modern glass fixture currently over our dining room table. It seems that our house was renovated by the only gay man in the Western Hemisphere with bad taste. Oprah gets Nate Burkus and I get the moron who thinks modern fixtures and chrome look great in a 1925 bungalow. We got these as wedding gifts {a year ago} to replace the god awful neon blue glass pendant lights currently over the island in our kitchen. {They're sitting in boxes next to the empty picture frames in the den.}
I think I'm most excited about this wine rack. I'm looking forward to getting my wine bottles out of the pantry so I can actually see what I have. I can't wait to have more room so that I can add to my collection stash.
I also picked up this set of prints. I think they'll look good in our hallway. Or in the box they came in sitting on the floor. I should really start picking home decor based on the box it's packaged in. That's all I seem to see of it anyhow.
I've heard the first step is admitting you have a problem. I HAVE A PROBLEM. I'm pretty sure the second step is calling a handyman and getting. shit. on. the. walls.
Oh, and if someone can call Ballard Designs and ask them to cut me off, that would be great. Because I've got my eye on this:
and I just don't have the floor space to store it. ...sigh...

This does not make you a bad person - it makes you a meticulous person who wants to make sure everything is just-so before she starts hammerin' shit (a technical term) all over the place. I think that is just fine!
Love your new buys... they are gorgeous and will look lovely hung up. Someday. :)
I love everything you bought! Those prints are AMAZING!!! And I would die for that headboard! Now I have my eye on it :) ha!
Bless your heart!!! I understand about being scared-- but you have great taste and it will turn out perfectly... if I were you, try a test run--meaning cut out paper and put it on the wall so you can see what it would look like (spacing, height, etc). That way once you put the hole you'll know what it's going to look like =)
I am the SAME way!!! It freaks me out. My poor bedroom is just going to be white forever...
Ditto here. We finally hung something above the fireplace and a wedding photo above our console table by the stairs. But that's it. The rest of the walls are bare. And we've been there 2.5 years!
Ahh, I totally understand! I have terrible decision making skills when it comes to decorating!
I think I like the other frame better too. ;)
I am a huge fan of Ballard Designs! Just remember that anything you put up can easily be taken down if you don't like it. My problem is that I buy things and love them so much and have to decide where to put them because they fit so well in different areas of my house. Go for it and then post what it looks like in your house. :)
Ok lady, it's time to hang shit. I'll tell you what...I'll come over and we'll hang all this stuff together. I'm a MASTER hanger. I have techniques. I have mad skillz. And I have a lot of wine that I could bring, so I promise you'll love everything by the end of the day!! Does next weekend work for you?
love it all!!!! now. PUT IT UP!!!!!! i'm with sara ... let her come over and hang it. i'd totally offer to come work (and get drunk) with you girls, but the 13 hour drive might be a bit of a sticking point. especially since my freaking car is being TOWED to the dealership tomorrow to have some multi-thousand dollar issue repaired. frick.
i expect a post SOON showing us how fab it all looks!!!
I'm the same way! We've been in our current home for almost a year and there is practically nothing on the walls - I guess I'm a commitment phobe! You really did have some luck at Ballard Designs - if money weren't an issue, I think I could outfit my entire home from the latest BD catalog...
I love the wine rack and the new chandelier! Good luck with your decorating, I hope you post picture if/when you get it done:)
P.S. What about the car shopping? How did that go?
You have an actual Ballards STORE? Jealous.
Love that headboard!
I love all your pics! Especially the wine rack!
I love love love those prints. I lusted after the myself but didn't want to spend that much money on the space for which I was eyeing them. So, i created my own, which was not all that successful since I don't have a creative bone in my body. And after all my hard work, I ended up spending just as much as I would have if I had just ordered them from Ballard. Ugh.
This entire post cracked me up! - LKRUGER
Your like my bf Jaclyn, in Oklahoma. I had to fly down there to hang the shit up :) I'm opposite! Wish I could help, I would have it done in 3 hours! Love the Ballards headboard! Have you seen the ones at Z Gallery! Good luck! Love your stuff
Ok, I am just now catching up on everyone's blog posts! First of all, I love everything you bought! And I can totally relate to your, shall we say issues? :) My problem is that I have varying styles/tatses and sometimes I have huge problems deciding the "theme" of the room or which direction I want to go with decorating. It can be so frustrating! But I just love that painting that you are having buyers remorse over!
