{long, whiny rant ahead. consider yourself warned.}
Unfortunately, this time, I'm the fool.
I try to keep things upbeat around here. It's not hard, my life is pretty great and when it's not, I'd really rather not focus on the bad things by writing about them. It's usually all sunshine, puppies and rainbows in my little corner of the interwebs. I like to think Pollyanna would be proud. {You know - Pollyanna, find the good in everything, yada yada. btw - i love me some hailey mills. Parent Trap, Miss Bliss - what's not to love?}
But today - I. Am. Not. Happy. And I have no one to blame but myself.
{I shall now proceed to blame my husband, the Atlantis resort, and the federal government for the mess I'm in.}
You see, I never wanted to change my name. {cue the part where I blame my husband} While my maiden last name was pretty sucks-ville, I was content to keep it. I lived 28 years with that last name. It was on my first report card, my high school letterman jacket, my law school diploma and was monogrammed on more items than I can count. It was my name.
Before we even got engaged, The Mister and I had many talks about how I felt about changing my name. While I wasn't a fan of the idea, he felt strongly about it. I explained to him my reasons - you've heard them, I won't repeat them - and he said I was blowing smoke up his, well you know that too. He thought my real reason was "I'm an independent woman and I'm not doing it." {He may have been right. Sort of.} Over time, however, we both came around to see each other's points of view. By the time we were engaged, he was happy with whatever I decided, though I knew he'd love it if I took his name, and I wasn't sure what to do. I was, after all, still an independent woman. I had accomplished a lot with that name. Why change it? But, my last name was sort of crummy... and his is a GREAT last name for a lawyer. Plus, people were going to call me "Mrs. So and So" whether I changed my last name or not.
The wedding came and went and I still hadn't decided. {And I'll be darned if 90% of the wedding cards weren't made out to Mr. & Mrs. So and So anyway.} After 3 or 4 months of being questioned by just about everyone but my husband as to what the hell I was going to be calling myself, I finally decided to add his last name to the end of mine. A compromise with myself I guess you could say. So, I went to the social security office and the DMV and changed my name. I changed all my work documents and updated Facebook, of course. You know, the important things.
Or so I thought.
You know what I didn't change? My passport. You know where I'm going in 18 days? The Bahamas.* Do you know the current turn-around time on an expedited request for a name change on a passport? Three weeks.
I'm totally hosed.
So, guess what I get to do to remedy this situation? Take a day off work, drive to Miami and get the passport changed in person. People who haven't been to Miami think it looks like this:
It actually looks like this:
On a good day. And it's never a good day. The trip is close to four hours with minimal traffic. The last time Miami had minimal traffic was 1962. Kill me now. And I better not get lost because my Spanish el-sucko's and it can be tough to find people who speak English down there. {I'm not joking or being racist - I'm serious. Last time I got lost visiting a friend on the way to Keys and I had to go to two gas stations and a Mickey D's before finding someone who spoke English at a....wait for it....Taco Bell. I wish I was kidding.}
I thought I'd found a pretty good solution to this problem. My sister is flying to Miami for business on Friday on her company's private plane and she offered me a spot on the plane. Perfect. The plane ride is less than an hour, I'll rent a car at the airport, hop over to the passport office and get this worked out, meet her back at the airport and be home in time to get in a few hours at the office that afternoon.
The federal government had other plans. {time to blame the federal government} You see, Friday will be 16 days before I leave for the Bahamas. And the feds won't let you make an appointment at the passport office until 14 days before you are scheduled to leave the country. They do not care that the difference of two days means you will have to drive at least 8 hours by yourself to Miami instead of hopping a private a plane for free. They said I can call back on Sunday to schedule an appointment. grrr
So, there you have it. My obnoxious rant. Poor baby, has to drive to Miami so she can go on vacation to the Bahamas. If you're wondering, I know exactly how ridiculous and spoiled I sound. And I do in fact realize that this is entirely my fault.
I pity the fool.
*{wherein I blame the Atlantis} We booked our flight through the Atlantis because they're offering an awesome by-one-get-one free flight deal. What's not awesome? They didn't ask for our passport info. when we booked the flights like the airlines usually do. Had we gotten the head's up at booking, I could have made the expedited cut-off and handled this via the mail.

Oh no!! :( Well hopefully it won't be too horrible and you can get it taken care of quickly. I would feel the same way!
I feel your pain. Although I didn't have a deadline to get my name all changed like you do, it was still a pain in the you know what. I'm still finding places that have my old name on file. I've basically given up and will just go by two names for the rest of my life! ;)
Ahhhh that totally sucks and I feel for you! Is there any way you could bring a copy of your marriage certificate along with your passport to show why the name is different? Who am I kidding...I'm sure you have thought of that and I am sure the answer is no. BOO! I feel so bad for you, but it will all be worth it when you are in the Bahamas and enjoy some much needed cocktails on the beach.
NO BUENO!!!! UGH, I hate that for you. Its just not convienent. at all. such is life i suppose. how exciting that you get to go to the bahamas though!!! BTW, since you're talking miami talk, I need to know everything you know about it. Im going with 3-4 girls in May!
That is just terrible! I'm sorry you have to deal with all of that. Make sure you put some good songs on your iPOD for the trip lol. I hope you don't get stuck in traffic like the picture.
But at least you'll be going to the Bahamas! How awesome :-)
Ohhh man that sucks - I had my own passport dilemma to contend with a couple weeks ago (we're going on a cruise to the Caribbean), but it was nothing compared to yours...
But ... thanks for the heads up about traffic in Miami. That's where we're cruising out of. We were going to drive (12 hours killmenow) but then my very sensible hubby thought it would be much better to fly. I think he's right. I just hope our cab makes it to the port in time with all that traffic...
It's totally worth is for the Bahamas, but I feel your pain. It's situations like that make me glad I live in DC where all those such offices are at my fingertips.
On another note, "I pitty the fool" is one of my all time favorite sayings and the movie Pollyanna defined my childhood.
Funny post.
First of all...the original Parent Trap is my favorite movie, ever:)
Second, that sucks. Can you just swim to the Bahamas from Miami? That probably makes me sound really stupid...but, maybe swimmers don't have to show their passport:)
OK, this is a hilarious post-it does suck though! Sorry! But at least you will get to take a day off of work to drive to Miami! :D
Man, this sucks! (Though I do have to tell you, that was a pretty damn funny post!). So sorry about your troubles, hope everything works out quickly. Oh, and I was totally the same way about my last name. I finally decided to use both names and just add his onto the end. In the 5 years since we got married, everyone seems to have dropped my maiden name anyway, just calling me by my married name. Oh well...
sorry your situation sucks!!! also sorry for laughing my arse off too. you're hilarious even when you're ticked, friend! hope it all gets sorted out so you can hit the beaches. :)
First you are correct. You dont get to complain about getting to go to the Bahamas. Some of us who will be getting snow all week in Boston are still bitter about not being able to get to go. Secondly, I blame that husband of yours. He should have man-ed up and made his little lady take his name from the get go like I did. This is clearly his fault.
Awwww, Poor Brother. We wish you were coming!
I blame the government for being dumb and not taking a marriage license that shows the name change, that's just dumb. As someone who has had to make the drive to Miami and back in one day several times, my thoughts are with you! =( If you time it right you will be able to miss most of the traffic. Leave really early and plan to run through Ft. Lauderdale after 9:30 which would put you in Miami just after 10. If it doesn't take too long you'll be out of there and home before rush hour traffic even hits Orlando. It sucks to leave at 6 am, but it is sooooo much better than sitting in traffic all day.
THANK YOU for reminding me I need to change my passport!!! Otherwise I would do the same thing and completely forget- it sucks and those rules are ridiculous what's the difference between 14 or 16 days??
Oh no, you poor thing! That is something I never thought about! I guess I must be totally spoiled too, because I can really sympathize. What a pain!
Here's to hoping you don't have to stop at an English speaking Taco Bell for directions! I laughed out loud when I read that.
Please tell me you read my FB comment!!! You really don't have to drive to Miami!!!! I was stuck in Atlanta because the Tampa Airport let me board the plan but the Atlanta Airport noticed "McFarland" instead of "Fulmer" I was literally stranded and balling my eyes out!!!!!! Come to find out Delta changed my name on the boarding pass to match the Passport, all was happy!!!
All you have to do is have your boarding pass say "Cupps" I PROMISE you Melissa!!!!!!!!
Call me if you need!
Best of Luck getting to Atlantis!! <3,
Ashlie
I 100% remember that trip asking those damn people how to get to a Taco Bell. No habla ingles. Seriously lady I just told you I want 2 number 3s and with diet cokes and you understood that fine!! Sorry you have to do all that Mel. Suckage major.
Oh geez! What a nightmare. We did the expedited thing on the passports (because we had 2 months) through the US mail even, and they were literally back to us within a week. I couldn't believe how fast it was. And of course we didn't need them that fast, so now we've probably wasted our one chance for the government to get something right. Good luck with this process!!
Oh Melissa!! Bless your heart... how do things like this always happen to those of us who seem to plan so well??? I know everything will work out and you'll be relaxing at Atlantis in a matter of weeks, but my fingers are crossed this situation gets easier for you sweetie!
I pity the fool (YOU) too! Haha! It's something we all put off I think. Hope that you get through it without too much of a pain. The Bahamas will be totes worth it, times like a thousand.
Man, I'm so so sorry! I really hope everything works out and you get the new passport without any hassle!
HOLY CRAPOLA!!!! I say you bill the Atlantis for your gas and try to get a free room. Side note, this week's episode of Guiliana and Bill is about how they aren't technically married due to a last-name-on-a-visa-screw up. They were married in Italy. Oopsy! At least you're legally married!!! xoxo LKruger
Bless your heart. Been there and done that. YOu know when i realized it? When we were in the airport getting ready to go to ITALY. Quite a mess that was but we were able to pull it off!
My passport is the one thing that I haven't changed either. One of my friends told me that if you just book everything in your maiden name that you will be good since your passport will be the ID you show people. No idea if that's true...
But good luck and I hope the drive doesn't suck as bad as it sounds like it will :)
