I was watching The Biggest Loser tonight and naturally my thoughts turned to food. Watching people exercise makes me hungry! The contestants were talking about the fattening foods they used to eat and how they had given up those foods for good.
I couldn't help but think of the foods I miss. Not because of dieting of course. Ha! Don't be ridiculous. I'm talking about the oh-so-good but oh-so-bad treats of homelands past and destinations afar. But for the many miles between me and these fine eateries, I'd be a frequent diner at each. And likely 10 pounds heavier.

Top three things I miss about California? My family, San Francisco sourdough bread and In-n-Out. If you've had the life altering experience that is In-n-Out, well then you know what I'm talking about. For those of you who haven't, you're missing out on one of life's greatest pleasures. Seriously.
Oh, what I wouldn't do for a Double Double.

If you've been to In-n-Out you've probably about their not-so-secret Secret Menu. I've yet to try the Animal Style Fries but they sure sound good. Fries, cheese, grilled onions, and special sauce? Yes please! Who's tried these?
Because I'm in Florida and In-n-Out has no apparent plans to expand east of the Rockies, the length between my In-n-Out fixes are now sadly measured in years rather than days. I was so excited at my last visit in July of 2008 that I photographed it. I'm surprised I was able to put my burger down long enough to snap the picture. And also that I somehow managed to exercise some restraint and ordered a single rather than a double double. Clearly that was a regrettable mistake. {And no, I'm not a giant fatty - just a regular one. I did not get two orders of fries. The other was my mom's.}
This is mall food court food at its very finest. Hand dipped corn dogs, fresh, made on the premises lemonade and my personal favorite - cheese on a stick.
Don't knock it till you try it. There's very few things in life better than fried cheese. And most of them are illegal.
I maintain that this is the only good thing to ever come out of Tallahassee.
While I was in law school, my husband {then boyfriend} was working in the Governor's office in Tallahassee, Florida and attending graduate school at Florida State University. I was a couple hours away in Gainesville but often made the trip to Tallahassee for weekend visits. Other than seeing The Mister, the thing I most looked forward to about those visits were our regular trips to 1 Fresh Stir Fry.
1 Fresh is basically a create your own stir fry fast food joint. Except it's way better than your typical fast food joint. You can choose your carb - noodles, white rice, brown rice, quinoa, your protein - chicken, beef, shrimp, tofu, etc., and you have a choice of veggies and sauce. It's all made fresh - there are no freezers on the premises. And every meal comes with a chocolate malt ball. I have no idea why and I find malt balls disgusting, but its what they do so I'm telling you about it.
(This was the only picture I could find. I think it looks pretty gross. Trust me, it's not.)
Unfortunately, 1 Fresh is a small company and currently only has locations in Tallahassee. And since The Mister left Tallahassee, I have yet to find a reason to make the four hour trip back there. Which means it's been over 3 years since I've had my beloved stir fry. Insert sad face here.
The Mister was in Tallahassee with friends for a FSU game last football season and I begged him to bring me home some 1 Fresh Stir Fry. Since he's used to my crazy requests, he agreed to pick some up and drive it the four hours home to me. But on the day after the game my husband's crazy friends decided to leave town at 8am - before 1 Fresh opened. I considered divorce when he showed up empty handed.
Crumbs Cupcakes
I've raved about Crumbs before. Hands down, the best cupcakes I've had. Gigantic. Moist. Sweet but not too sweet. Just the right amount of frosting. And so many flavors.
Thank goodness there's a plane ride between me and these cupcakes! My will power is just not strong enough.
What are the foods you miss?

Omg...those cheese bacon fries and the cupcakes. Look sooooo good. Never been, but now I want to go!
Cute blog, just found you, check us out when you have time :)
AHHH!!! I had my first dose of In-n-Out in Vegas back in January! I still dream about it! I dont know what life would be like if I had access to those burgers on a regular basis!
As a former California girl I miss In N Out too! So yummy!
I have never had In-n-Out. I know, what a shame. I tried to go when I was in San Francisco, but the line was ridic!
We don't have any of that in Canada. Jealous! :(
This post made me hungry. I'm a double-double girl too, and Animal Style fries are delish! I usually ask for no sauce though. I live maybe 10 minutes from the closest In-n-Out but I swear there's at least one in every city around me!
I'll have to try the fried cheese sometime. I really miss Krispy Kreme original glazed donuts. All the KK's here are closing!
Stop it right now! I can't beleive you did this to me. What I wouldn't give for an in-n-out burger right now. And it's ojnly 9:54 am.
Oh wow, you just killed all dieting motivation I had. Seriously, what's the point of getting sick if you can't lose a couple pounds. And now this post made me realize I'm starving and must have a corndog and burger post haste. Ahhh!
I don't really miss any food from my hometown (because it was too small to even have restaurants...I'm serious), but I really really miss the food from college! My college town had so many amazing restaurants! It's definitely where I became a foodie and realized how much I loved eating! I'm going back there this weekend and cannot wait!
those cupcakes look heavenly, and don't judge me because i'm totally not an In and Out fan. ;)
I have totally the opposite reaction when I am watching Biggest Loser. I feel like Jillian is screaming at me, personally, and I need to go on a 10 mile run to get her to stop. Do you start the shred yet? You'll have to let us know what you think of it.
I just had my very first In-N-Out experience last weekend when I visited California for the first time! Very tasty! I certainly wouldn't mind going back. :) Have you had Five Guys? That is my most favorite burger of all time. In-N-Out reminded me a bit of Five Guys.
Also, I live in NYC and Crumbs cupcakes are my weakness. I have to have one nearly every weekend. There is no hope of dieting in my future so long as I live here.
Love your blog!
I am completely in LOVE with the animal-style fries AND cheese on a stick. And I live within 10 minutes of both-- totally dangerous.
Ha! This post cracked me up. I've had the deliciousness that is In-n-Out and while I wasn't super addicted, I was a fan.
On the other hand, I was absolutely addicted to the lemonade from Hot Dog on a Stick!!! I (very briefly) worked at the Fashion Valley mall in San Diego and I used to take that tasty goodness home by the gallon!
I was just talking to Linde last weekend about 1 Fresh...a friend of ours from law school is getting married in Tally in November and I already informed (note I didn't ask) him that we WOULD be going there when we're in town. I'm with you on the malt ball thing though. Mine always went in the trash. And actually, I can't say that I know anyone that ate them. Ever.
As for cupcakes, I've never had Crumbs, but I do love me some Cami Cakes (http://www.camicakes.com/)!
Okay, now that I'm hungry again, I should go. Thanks for giving me my own walk down food memory lane!
Did you know that Crumbs Cupcakes will ship cupcakes anywhere in the 48 states!?!?! I've gotten them delivered to my house not once but twice because they are THAT AMAZING!!! So go to crumbs.com and order yourself a six pack- now!
My husband travels to CA at least once a month and always makes a special trip to In-N-Out, he even brought me back a t-shirt since I've never been!!
Totally cracking up at the fact that The Biggest Loser gets you to start thinking about food! I found myself snacking on the couch last night while I watched BL - how pathetic am I?! Have heard wonderful things about In n' Out and Crumbs, but have never had the pleasure of trying either one - I need to do something about that...
Those cupcakes look amazing!!! And fried cheese? Love it. Sign me up!
Your post inspired me to write about my favorite restaurants. Hop on over and check it out!
Ahhhhhh, cupcake heaven! I miss the Mexican and BBQ joints in Houston...they just aren't as good in FLA!
I LOVE 1 FRESH! :) Brandi and I go there EVERY time I'm in town, another fav is Bagel Bagels wine and cheese sandwich! :) oh heaven...I'm starving! (on weight watchers AGAIN...I seriously have a food addiction and need medical help.
