greatest thing since sliced bread

The bee's knees.

The cat's pajamas.

The bomb dot com.

Okay, enough with the ridiculous idioms.  On to the point.

My library rocks my socks off.  {Yes, you read that right.}

In case you were wondering, yes, people were allowed to read on the roof during Library Week. And no, that's not why my library is awesome.  It's because of this:

Those are books.  On my front porch.  And they were delivered there, free of charge, by my public library.  {!!!}  How amazing is that?

Until recently, I had no idea this service was available.  A couple weeks ago, I went to the library website to find out whether a newly released book I wanted to read was available.  {Full disclosure: I'm lazy and didn't want to walk the 1/4 mile to the library at lunch to find out whether the book I wanted was checked out.}  I entered my library card number and password at the website and I was in business.  A quick search revealed that the numerous copies of the desired book were all checked out.  However, at the bottom of the page, I spotted an innocuous little button labeled "Request".  Being a newb to the library site, I figured "what the heck?" and clicked it.  I thought maybe I could put my name on a waiting list and perhaps get a call or email when the book became available.

This is when I made the discovery that will save me hundreds {and hundreds and hundreds} of dollars per year.

By "requesting" the book, I was placed on the waiting list to receive the book.  And once the book became available, it would be delivered to my front door.  Free of charge.

What?!?

Turns out, it isn't just for unavailable books either.  I can request any book in the library and have it delivered to my front door.  I'm sorry, but I think that is just the greatest thing I've ever heard.

I can't fathom spending $249 on a Kindle or Nook and $9.99 per book when this service is available.  And the book or two that used to find its way to my cart on every Target trip?  A thing of the past, I declare!  Oh the money I'll save.*  And sharing books instead of buying new will help to reduce my liberal guilt carbon footprint.  Win, win!

Orlando Public Library, you've made me a very happy lady.

Does your library offer this service?

ETA:  I was asked which books I ordered - my first shipment included: The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, Mommywood by Tori Spelling {I know, I know, but she makes me laugh} and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.  I received Heart of the Matter by Emily Giffin on Wednesday.

*Don't think for a minute this will stop my marathon trips to Barnes & Noble, scouring the stacks for new books to read, Starbucks latte in hand.  Never gonna happen.  A girl's got to have a little fun.  But I'll try to make a list and order my finds from the library instead.  nopromises.

That is awesome! My library will put a hold on a book for you and let you know when you can pick it up, but no door to door service! I'm jealous!

Wow - that's amazing! I haven't been to the libs in ages, but now I'm intrigued. And I totally agree with you about B&N, there's nothing better than spending an afternoon there, Starbucks in hand. xxSAS

I can't believe your library offers this service! That is the coolest thing ever. I love the library and always reserve books online, but then I have to go pick them up. Maybe I should start sending your blog post to my library's e-mail address. haha.

That is the most amazing thing I've ever heard!! I would use the library 10x more if they actually brought books to me- I'm so jealous!

Oh my goodness, you are lucky! That would save me SO much money. I am going to check and see if our library here has that.

Aren't you a lucky girl - what an amazing service! I wish this at my local library but no dice. I'm curious as to what books you had delivered!

Just another reason why living in downtown Orlando is awesome! Another reason...tons of bars you can walk to! Carbon footprint that!

This is incredible- I must check out whether my library has this. . .although somehow I don't think Knoxville is as up to date.

My boyfriend and I always joke about how dorky we are for spending so much time at the library. It's so close to my house, you can check out as many books as you want, and you can rent movies for free- I don't understand why no one else utilizes it like we do, lol! Guess we're the biggest nerds in town.

Oh my! This is the best thing I've ever heard. The Santa Monica library is literally 3 blocks from me and I go there all the time. But I'd be SO happy if they delivered!!! I'm going onto their site right now to check things out. Great post!

Oh, how truly glorious! All libraries should do that-it would not only increase their "traffic" but also be much more green! Why does that sound grammatically incorrect? :D

that is so awesome! I'm jealous of all your reading! I wish I had more time for it. I just need to get a book to keep on my nightstand but I always get so obsessed with books and before I know it I'm staying up WAYYY to late! (not that you needed to know my life story about books)

Just found your blog - that is SO cool! I don't think mine does this - but I'm going to check! I read the Time Traveler's wife around this time last year - LOVED IT!! I read The heart of the matter last week - also a good one! I'm with you - no kindle or nook for me!

I am such a library nerd, I have memorized my library bar code number. My library does everything you said except deliver it to my door. I'm really jealous! BUT they now have self checkout now, so I just walk in, get my book labeled with my name of the shelf, check myself out at the library (isn't that what every kid wants to do anyway?) and then walk back out. It's pretty sweet.

P.s. I totally ordered my library card after reading this post. When it came in the mail yesterday, the roomies and B looked at me like I was crazy.
