temptation, thy name is inbox

The internet is a beautiful thing.  I can feed my compulsive need to worry by self-diagnosing a cold as cancer on WedMD.  I can Skype with my brother in Boston without leaving my living room.  And I can find the perfect recipe for coq au vin to impress company.

But sometimes, the internet gets me into trouble.  Like when I manage to spend hundreds of dollars from my couch.

My inbox can be a dangerous, dangerous place.

For me, checking email is akin to taking a stroll through the mall.  And stopping in every store. For every email I receive from a friend, I have three from retailers. Offers of "Free shipping" and "20% off a purchase of $100 or more" abound.  There are shoe sales and furniture sales and free gifts with purchase.  Tory Burch and Kate Spade want to show me their new arrivals. Crate & Barrel has great deals on outdoor furniture - "just in time for summer!"  Based on my previous purchase of 12,000 food magazines, Amazon thinks I might also enjoy "bon apetit".  Victoria Secret is offering $10 off their deep plunge, super cleavage skank-o-bra and a free tote bag with swim purchase.  J. Crew is introducing its new line of $600 cardigans and Lands End Canvas just won't leave me the hell alone.

FOR THE LOVE!

It's more than one girl should have to resist before 8am.  Most days I've barely got a cup of coffee to my lips before the retail assault begins.

Oh sure, I could unsubscribe.  But then I'd miss out on things like this:

So many cute new things!  Must have these adorable yellow pumps for summer.

And this clutch is too darn cute.  What if I had missed this?!?!  Oh no, I can't unsubscribe from Ms. Spade's emails.

This was sent to me by my friendly neighborhood liquor store.

$15 off $100 of wine? Yes, please! Do you all have Total Wine by you? I hope so. It's like Toys 'R' Us for grown ups.  Aisles and aisles of wine, champagne, liquor and beer - and at dirt cheap prices.  If Dorothy had been to Total Wine she probably would have clicked her heels together three times and said "There's no place like Total Wine."

Just when you think it can't get better?  A shoe sale.

Neiman Marcus delivered this little gem to me this morning.  I just had to take a peek.

And somehow these ended up in my shopping cart.

Pink crocodile TB Miller flats? To quote Ms. Zoe, "I die."  I've yet to pull the trigger but I'm sure thinking about it.

Not to be outdone, Nordstrom is having its Half Yearly Sale for Women & Children

and is also offering this Trina Turk make-up bag & goodies with your $75 Clinique purchase.

Williams-Sonoma suggested I buy my dad the Vinturi Wine Aerator for Father's Day.

I'm not sure Dad would love it but I know I would.  I'll take one for red and one for white, please! Happy Father's Day to me!

So you see, with all these fabulous offers, I couldn't possibly unsubscribe.  I'll simply have to soldier on and hope my credit card and I can make it out of the Galleria that is my inbox without too much damage.

This is exactly why I have two e-mail accounts. One is my original, first-ever e-mail account, before I realized that signing up for stuff would create loads of spam. That's the one I use to subscribe to all retailers. The other is my true personal account for correspondence. Keeping them separate lets me keep up with the world without having to look at Shop It To Me and be tempted every day.

(Okay, I actually have a third e-mail account for blogging... but that is complicating the matter of hiding from retailers when I need to by not logging into the other account!)

This is why I don't shop online. I had a little stint back in February or so where I caught the bug ... and then realized it would get me into MAJOR trouble. So I tell myself that I can only buy things in person, so I can try them on. Good excuse ... right?

My inbox and your inbox must be sisters! I have the SAME problem!

I get tons of stuff too, and I can't for the life of me stop them. I love the discounts...even if I don't use it!

Too funny. We have all been there. I adore those yellow pumps!

oh gosh I love those pumps!!!

I have all of the coupons and stuff go straight to my spam. Then once a week, I take a peak. This way the temptation isn't in my face all of the time, but I don't have to unsubscribe either :)

Wow, I thought my inbox got hit up a lot, but it's nothing compared to yours! Temptation abounds. The ones that kill me are the emails from Rue La La, Gilt Groupe and Haute Look - I so often justify my (still) expensive purchases by arguing to my husband that they are up to 60% off the regular price!

Oh girl, I feel your pain... This week has been especially hard with all the great sales, etc!

Those pink croc Tory sandals are tempting me as well! Also, Total Wine is my version of heaven. Simply put, I. love. that. place.

Oh, I can totally relate! The Banana Republic emails are my worst enemy...every week I get an email for 40% off one item, how can I resist that, especially when I get free shipping on everything!

I stopped carrying credit cards in my wallet, but that doesn't really matter, because the worst assaults occur right here at home!

I love love love to shop but I just can't do the shopping that I want to right now... must save money! These are some great deals though and though pink TB's are to-die-for. Have fun shopping!

I found your blog through Southern Comfort and can't remember if I've ever commented, but I love this blog! I have the same exact problem with the emails - I just delete them right away and don't read the subject line because it's too tempting. I am on a self-imposed no shopping streak. I've thought about unsubscribing, but have this fear that I'll miss something really important aka a REALLY good deal. Ha!

p.s. I'm currently obsessed with the wine aerator. I want to aerate EVERY liquid in my house. In all seriousness though, it really helps if you are eager/ impatient to drink red wine. I'm not sure how much it really contributes to the whites, which don't need to "open up" as much.
