The interwebs are abuzz about the controversial Marie Claire article entitled "Should 'Fatties' Get a Room? (Even on TV?)." Have you read it?
I have. And I'm appalled.
I intended to write my own scathing response to Marie Claire. But then I read Jen Lancaster's counterpoint to the article. She nailed it.
Marie Claire, you should be ashamed. If the intent in publishing that article was to generate controversy - congratulations - you've done it. But you've done it at the expense of this reader. And I'm certain many more.

Wow, I'm pretty apalled! I really don't have any words besides that. That's crazy.
Hmmm... this is tough one. Clearly, Maura Kelly is a jerk. Or maybe it's Marie Claire's editors that are first-class dip-shits. Marie Claire not only condoned the writing of a highly offensive article, they didn't even do their "homework". Clearly, Jen Lancaster's reaction is awesome (love her and all her points)... BUT, I still think obesity is serious problem within our society. Maybe we need more brutally honest dialogue out there? I dunno, it comes down to the fact that I really have no room to talk, as I've never struggled with my weight.
Julia, I totally agree - obesity is an epidemic. It needs to change. But I take issue with the needless insults and insensitivity. Saying overweight people are digusting to look at and unfit for TV - I won't condone that with my $$ by purchasing their magazine.
very insensitive..
I certainly won't be buying a Marie Claire anytime soon!
You know, we just went through kids getting bullied for being gay. There are hundreds of thousands of kids each year who are bullied for their weight. If we expect children and young adults to be better, it has to start with grown ups setting an example on what is acceptable behavior. Maura is nothing but a bully and her actions shouldn't be condoned. Where is the compassion?
Not only have they upset readers with that article, they seem to have also upset them with an article about nutrition/fitness bloggers. Wow. Very aggressive and opinionated magazine.
Wowwww.
I agree: obesity in America is a huge problem. But it's a national problem in that EVERYONE needs to take some blame - the media, the government, our food suppliers, big business, etc. etc. etc. in addition to the "fat people" themselves.
This is not - I repeat, this is NOT the way to get people to lose weight. It isn't encouraging or motivating (despite her YOU CAN DO IT mini-paragraph that made me want to claw my eyes out), it's incredibly degrading and essentially says "You are not worth the space that you take up if you are obese."
And it's wrong.
And I cannot BELIEVE that Marie Claire would publish something like that in their magazine.
Agreed that Maura is a bully, for sure!
boo MC...I might cancel my subscription, I hardly read it anyway. That article was way too insensitive! I hope it make ratings for the show increase!
Definitely agree!! They should be ashamed.
I heard about this on the news or the View or somewhere but had not read the article till you linked to it ( thanks) that was pretty brave of them to publish something so offensive but I did love the other girls article .
Wow. I don't even have words. Nor does this "writer" deserve any words.
I do have one more comment.. (so much for no words! ha!)
Does someone not edit the content?? Did someone else not read this and think that it might not be a great idea to publish this crap? How many insensitive idiots work there?
What a sick article (but don't you just love Jen Lancaster?) Not that I bought Marie Claire really anyways, but I DEFINITELY wont be now.
Did you ever read Good in Bed? Its almost a similar plot line...at least with the article and everything.
Hummm...Marie Claire is doing a good job at making people mad lately; first with the bloggers telling people to be too skinny and now with this...yikes!
